TOP TIPS FOR BEGINNER TECHS
1. Believe in yourself
Cliché but I think this is the most important factor of all. You can do anything you put your mind to. Anyone can have a great idea or want to start their own business, the successful ones take action to make it happen. Start by taking it slowly, step by step, and it will all piece together. Don’t care what anyone thinks. One of my favourite sayings and something to think about is; “You’re cringe until you make it”.
2. Use as many friends and family to practice on as you can
This one goes without saying, but the more you practice the easier it becomes and the better you get. If you want to be a successful nail tech/nail artist why wouldn’t you spend every spare minute perfecting your skill? This will help your prep work/shaping/product application/refining/nail art/timings etc. You get out what you put in! I know at first it can be disheartening as it is not as easy as it looks, but trust the process and don’t compare yourself to others who have been in the industry for years. One day a beginner tech will be looking up to you and your work.
TIP - Take lots of pictures whilst you’re practicing to look back at how far you’ve come, keep them no matter how bad you think they are.
3. Work on social media presence
Post post post. Social media is free advertisement, why wouldn’t you use it? Post every single set that you do, whether it be on a story or on your grid - Instagram reels are especially great for engagement. Decide on your niche, whether it be ‘clean girl aesthetic’ or nail art focussed, and what type of nail art etc. This will help potential clients decide whether you are the right tech for them. You can even practice nail art on yourself or on press-on nails.
TIP - A peely base gel is ideal for content.
4. Building client relationships
Always give each client that sits in your chair your full attention, whether it’s their first or tenth appointment. Yes a client will return if the nails are good, but a lot of the time clients return to you as an individual. Listen to what they say, remember details about them and their lives (take notes to keep in their consultation form if it helps), always be friendly and welcoming, and always keep it professional. This will ensure you build established relationships and a loyal client base. Not every client will be the right fit, and that’s okay. Remember this can take some time, so don’t get disheartened just because it doesn’t happen overnight.
5. Invest in high quality tools and products
You will need to do some research for this one. Read reviews, look at their product selection and look at their brand ethos to help you decide whether that brand is right for you. What brands work for me might not work for you. If you invest in high quality tools and products it will make your job a lot easier and give a higher quality service = returning clients and higher pricing.
6. Never stop learning
There is always more to learn in this industry. Keeping up with trends can be especially difficult as it is always changing and we are expected to know how to do it straight away whilst having the right products to hand. Although this is very important in my opinion as it keeps you relevant to new and existing clients, and you get to learn a new technique/design in the process. I have been in the industry for 4 years now and feel that I’ve only just got my prep routine how I want it in the time I want it done.
REMEMBER - Taking a new course to further your skills and knowledge does not mean that you don’t know what you’re doing, it simply means you want to become even better to advance in your profession.
Remember we all have to start somewhere but your business won’t grow without hard work, dedication and determination. How much do you want it?
